Description
Fair Hill House and the adjoining barn date from 1729, as indicated by the date and initials T. (&) E.W. above the entrance. The house is constructed of hammer-dressed red sandstone and features large flush quoins. It has a graduated sandstone slate roof and an original rendered end chimney stack, along with a 19th-century central yellow brick chimney stack. The house is two storeys high with four bays. The entrance has a 20th-century top glazed door with a moulded architrave, inscribed entablature, and moulded cornice. To the right of the entrance is a small fire window with a chamfered surround, while all other windows are enlarged two-pane sashes, with a narrower window above the entrance. The adjoining barn, built in the 19th century, is also made of red sandstone and has a sandstone slate roof with a 20th-century brick chimney stack. It is two storeys tall with numerous bays. The ground floor entrance features a keyed round arch, with a 20th-century opening to the right. The loft has a plank door and no windows or vents on the facade. The name "Fair Hill" comes from the cattle fair that was held in the field behind the property.
