Description

Virginia House and the adjoining byre/barn is a house dating from the late 17th century, with later additions and alterations. It is built from coursed, squared sandstone blocks and features a graduated slate roof with copings and kneelers, along with stone end chimneys. The two-storey, three-bay front has a 19th-century gabled wooden porch with decorated barge-boards and a finial. To the left of the door is a 19th-century three-light mullioned window, while to the right is an original four-light mullioned window. The first floor has a single 19th-century sash window and two small Yorkshire sashes, all with glazing bars.

Inside, the ground floor to the north has a bracketed fireplace with a beef-box at the first-floor level. The cross-passage entrance has been converted into a cupboard, but the stone heck with a wooden seat remains. A 17th-century bed-cupboard is present, featuring small turned balusters for ventilation holes. The ground floor to the south includes late 18th-century to early 19th-century panelling, with access doors to the bed cupboard and cupboards on either side of the fireplace. Throughout the building, there are surviving 17th-century and 18th-century panelled doors.

A late 19th-century extension made of slobbered rubble is located at the rear. The barn, which adjoins to the north, is constructed from coursed, squared rubble and has a corrugated asbestos roof. A rainwater head at the junction with the house is dated 1815. The front openings have been altered in the 20th century, and there is a ramp entrance at the rear. The roof has been raised.
