Description

14-20 Salthouse Road is a terrace of seven cottages built in 1849, which have been altered over time. They were constructed for the Furness Railway Company to accommodate their workers. The cottages are made of red sandstone, with some areas rendered or pebble-dashed, and feature a graduated slate roof with a capped ridge.

The buildings are two storeys high, with each cottage having a single window on each floor. The arrangement includes three pairs of cottages and a single house at the left end (No. 14). Each pair has doors positioned together, flanked by square-headed windows, and smaller, centrally located windows on the first floor. The windows have stone lintels and projecting sills, while the doors and casements have been replaced later. There is a stack at the right end and three ridge stacks on the party walls between adjoining pairs.

These cottages are significant as they represent the second row of cottages built after the arrival of the Furness Railway, as indicated on the 1850 Ordnance Survey map, alongside Nos. 2-10 Salthouse Road, before any other housing was developed in the area. The left end of the row has been shortened due to the development of Rawlinson Street. It is noted that No. 13 Salthouse Road, which now adjoins No. 14, was not part of the original 1849 scheme and is not considered of special interest.
