Description
The Rectory and St Mary's Lodge, formerly listed as the Vicarage, dates from 1783 and circa 1830, with a fragmentary early wing. The building is three storeys high, constructed of rubble with a slate roof and gable chimneys. It features a symmetrical five-bay design, with the outer bays spaced more widely than the inner ones. The structure includes quoins, an attic sill band, and a projecting eaves cornice that returns some distance on the gable ends to create an open pediment. The windows have plain stone surrounds and are sashed with all glazing bars. The doorway has a deep reveal, a wooden surround, and a hood supported by moulded consoles, with a door made of six raised and fielded panels. At the back, there is a large semicircular bow where the cornice continues, featuring curved windows and sashes similar to those at the front. Inside, the ground floor room with the bow has a coved enriched cornice and a stone Doric fireplace, along with panelled shutters on the windows. The staircase is a four-flight closed string dogleg design with turned balusters and a heavily moulded ramped handrail, with the newels formed by coupled columns. St Mary's Lodge was recently created from a wing believed to date from the 17th century, which was significantly reduced in size in the late 19th century. This lodge is two storeys tall, also built of rubble with a slate roof and one chimney, featuring boxed sashes and a modern doorway.
