Description
Nelson's Bridge over the Kendal/Lancaster Canal is a canal bridge built around 1816. It is likely designed by engineer John Fletcher, based on the original designs of John Rennie, whose route for the canal was authorized in 1792. The bridge is constructed from squared, coursed limestone and features a limestone string course, copings, and a rounded fender course. It has an elliptical arch with rusticated voussoirs and a keystone. The parapets are ramped with a flat top and terminate in pilasters. The bridge is approximately 3.5 meters wide between the parapets, and there are steps leading up at the southwest corner.
