Description
Mattinson's Bridge, located over the Kendal/Lancaster Canal near Lane Farm in Crooklands, is a canal bridge built around 1818 by engineer John Fletcher, based on the original design by John Rennie, whose canal route was authorized in 1792. The bridge is constructed of squared coursed limestone, featuring limestone string copings and a rounded fender course. It has a single elliptical arch made of rusticated voussoirs and a keystone. The shallow arched parapets are curved in plan and have pilasters at each end. The bridge is approximately 10 feet wide between the parapets and is built into embankments at both ends, with a flight of steps leading up the embankment on the north-west side. Additionally, there is an iron rope guard at the south-west corner of the arch, which is stamped with the name T. SAUL.
