Description
The New Inn and attached buildings in Biggar Village, Walney Island, date back to 1758, as indicated by a date plaque. Originally a house that functioned as an inn, the structure features roughcast stone and a graduated slate roof. The house is two storeys high with two windows on the first floor, while the outbuildings, which are part of an elongated range, have a lower roof on the right side.
The house has a gabled central porch that includes a 9-pane casement window at the front and a part-glazed door on each side. The 20th-century casements, which have glazing bars, are set on projecting stone sills with painted surrounds. The house has end stacks.
The outbuildings adjacent to the house contain domestic accommodation and feature external stone steps leading to an elongated landing, which has a door and window below and two doorways above, one of which is now glazed. There is a casement window on the ground floor to the left of the steps, and small casements flank the first-floor doorways. The remainder of the outbuildings has been extensively remodelled.
Inside the house, a room accessed through a door beneath the steps showcases an 18th-century ashlar fireplace with corbels and a cornice.
