Description

Castle Dairy, located at 26 Wildman Street in Kendal, is a farmhouse that likely has ties to Kendal Castle, although the name 'Dairy' may actually be a corruption of 'Dowry'. The building probably dates back to the 14th century and underwent significant remodeling around 1560 for Anthony Garnett, with many dated features still visible today. It has been converted into a restaurant. The structure is built from coursed rubble with quoins and features graduated stone-flag roofs along with stone chimneys, which are corbelled on the west wing and project from the east wing. The layout includes a central hall flanked by two-storey cross-wings on either end.

The interior is exceptionally well-preserved, as noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments for Westmorland published in 1936, with some updates. Multi-light windows on the hall front and the first floor of the west wing were renewed in 1983/84, closely matching the original design except for the heads carved on the label-stops of the hall window. Additionally, two original doorways with pointed heads have been reopened on the left side of the cross-passage, and the fireplace on the ground floor of the east wing, along with some original windows, have been unblocked. An extension at the rear of the west wing has been demolished.
