Description
Boxtree Farmhouse and Lupton Tower comprise two houses, dating to the late 17th or early 18th century with 19th-century additions. The buildings are constructed of stone rubble, with some ashlar detailing, and have slate roofs. They are arranged in an L-shape, with gabled wings extending to the east.
The east facade of the farmhouse is four bays wide, with flanking gabled wings. The windows are sash windows with single glazing bars and horns, with a larger window on the ground floor of the fourth bay. The entrance has ovolo-moulded reveals and an embattled lintel inscribed "RSA/1720". The farmhouse features a cross-axial stack and gable-end stacks, with the wings also having gable-end stacks. The north return has an entrance sheltered by a pentice. The west elevation has an outshut with a catslide roof.
The south wing forms Lupton Tower, a 19th-century addition of three bays, with a recessed range to the east. The first bay projects forward as a three-story roughcast tower, and the third bay projects forward under a gable. The tower has a projecting embattled parapet with raised angles and roll-moulded coping. It contains three-light double-chamfered mullioned windows with label moulds and sashes with glazing bars. The return side of the tower has two windows of two lights on each floor. The second bay has a lean-to porch with a gablet over a segmental-headed entrance and a ball finial. The windows have casements, and a large bay window to the third bay has a canted oriel above.
The interior includes a spice cupboard door inscribed "RGS/1680”. The building is said to have a staircase with turned balusters and square newels, although this was not observed.
