Description

A cornmill, likely dating from the early 19th century, now converted into a house. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with quoins, and has a slate roof. It is two storeys high with a basement, and the north-east elevation is gabled with two bays. Windows are small-paned casements. A basement light is present in the second bay of the north-east elevation. The north-west elevation features a lateral stack and a small gabled wing, with a recessed roughcast wall to the north-east, containing a 20th-century door and window. The rear of this wing has casements, including one round-headed window above the entrance, with a glazed door. The south-east elevation is of three bays, with small-paned casements; the first-floor window in the first bay was formerly a loading door. A 20th-century lean-to glazed sun lounge with an engrailed parapet is attached to the basement on the south-east. The south-west facade has a projecting wheelhouse, where a flat roof has replaced a previous lean-to roof, and a glass panel has been inserted into the balcony parapet. A mid-breast wheel, constructed of iron and timber, is located within, though in a dilapidated state as of 1987. The first floor has a segmental-headed entrance with 20th-century patio doors. A stack is situated on the corner of the building. The interior has been altered, but much of the original machinery remains in situ, mainly timber, including stones. Despite the modern alterations, the preserved machinery contributes to the building's group value as a significant historical example.
