Description
The Council Offices and Victoria Hall, including attached offices and a restaurant, were built in 1898 by John Hutton of Kendal. The building is constructed from snecked limestone rubble with sandstone ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. It is two storeys high and has a six-window range, with mullioned and transomed windows. The second and sixth window bays include round-arched doorways with pilasters that curve forward to support open pediments. There is a wide timber window on the ground floor to the left. Above the first, second, and sixth window bays, there are shaped gables topped with ball finials. A wider shaped gable with a ball finial and spikes is located above window bays three to five. A rainwater hopper on the left is dated '1898'. To the left, there is another gable in a similar style that contains the entrance to the restaurant and offices on the ground floor. The interior is said to feature an iron staircase, friezes, and a balcony with decorative plasterwork.
