Description
The footbridge over the River Bela, located approximately 400 meters east-north-east of Milnthorpe Bridge, is a former road bridge that has been converted into a footbridge. It was built in 1730 by mason Robert Robinson and waller Robert Bindloss. The structure is made of stone rubble and features roughly cut copings and voussoirs. It has two segmental arches and cutwaters with pedestrian refuges situated between them. The carriageway is 12 feet wide. The bridge has landscape value and was closed to traffic in 1813 when a new turnpike road was established. Further details and maps of the old and new roads can be found in J.F. Curwen's "Records of Kendal" published in 1926 and "History of Heversham with Milnthorpe" published in 1930.
