Description
The road bridge to the north of Milford Cottage is a late 18th-century structure that has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. It is built from rubble green Lakeland stone, arranged in courses. The bridge features a double segmental arch that spans the Newland Beck, with the arches and a central cutwater pier originating from bedrock. It has shallow parapet walls with splayed abutments, although many of the original copings have been replaced with concrete capping. The abutment wall on the north-east side rises to follow the increasing ground level on the north side of the beck. This bridge carries a track over the beck, located next to the spillway of the weir that directs water to power the blowing engine of the Newland Furnace.
