Description
A terrace of three houses, built in the late 18th or early 19th century, with later 19th and 20th-century alterations and additions. The houses are of rendered stone construction with artificial slate roof coverings, brick stacks, and plain eaves. The east elevation presents a stepped range of three- and two-storey dwellings. The south house (1 Newland House) has two doorways, one inserted in the 20th century and one dating to the 19th century, with a six-panel door and upper two glazed panels. A tripartite glazing-bar sash window sits centrally, with 6 over 6 panes, flanking sashes of 2 over 2 panes. A wide two-light two-pane casement is located at the south end, and stacked two-light two-pane side-hung casements are on the first and second floors, all with stone cills and flat heads. The centre house (Newland House) features a renewed canted timber bay window with glazing-bar sashes of 8 over 8 panes to the centre and 4 over 4 panes to the side lights. A doorway to the north, slightly advanced, has a six-panel door with glazed upper two panels and a shallow rectangular overlight. Stacked two-light two-pane casements are on the first and second floors, all with painted cills. The north house (Furnace Cottage) has two three-storey bays and a lower two-storey range which extends into the end of an attached outbuilding to the northwest of a nearby iron furnace. The ground floor of the three-storey part has altered door and window openings with segmental arches. There are two first-floor two-light two-pane casements with segmental arched heads, and flat-headed casements to the second floor. The lower range to the north breaks forward, with a six-panel door having four glazed panels, and stacked two-light two-pane casements to the north. An angled wall with a 20th-century garage door is attached to the front wall of the former casting house area of the furnace complex. The houses are listed for group value.
