Description
The Old School House, dated 1856, is now a house that was originally a school. It is constructed from limestone rubble with red sandstone dressings and features a slate roof. The building has a T-shaped plan with lean-tos at the angles and is designed in the Gothic Revival style. It is a single-storey structure.
The front gable displays large quoins and three lancet windows set in bonded ashlar surrounds. Each window has a latticed iron casement and a shouldered head. Above the windows, there is a ribbon inscribed with 'FEAR GOD AND HEED HIS COMMANDMENTS', and above that, a quatrefoil plaque under a hoodmould reads '1856/ IN MEMORY OF/ - - - MICHAELSON ESQ/ OF THE ISLE OF BARROW'. The building features shaped kneelers, ashlar gable copings, and an apex finial.
The lean-tos on each side are set back and have single-light windows with ashlar copings. There is a quoined square-headed doorway located in the left return of the left lean-to. Both returns of the main building have gabled elevations similar to the front, except for slits where the front gable ornament would typically be.
