Description
The Old Post Office, Old Post Office Cottage, and Old Post Office Barn in Great Salkeld were formerly two houses, one of which served as a post office, along with an adjoining barn and cart shed. The building is dated and inscribed over the entrance of the central house with "J & MS 1757," indicating its original construction, and has alterations dated "M & SB 1854." The structure features red sandstone rubble walls that are partly rendered and painted, with a graduated sandstone slate roof that has been partly rebuilt in the 20th century, including rebuilt red sandstone chimney stacks.
The building is two storeys high with two bays, each bay accompanied by a left two-bay barn/cart shed, all under a common roof. The barn has a front gabled extension. The former Post Office has a central panelled door and sash windows with glazing bars set in painted stone surrounds. The Old Post Office Cottage features a right panelled door within an 18th-century stone surround, along with sash windows with glazing bars in stone surrounds. The left windows are beyond a straight joint, indicating they were once part of the barn, which includes a central segmental-arched doorway and a slit vent. An extension covers the left side and includes a casement window.
