Description
Kirkbie Kendal Lower School, originally two houses, was built in 1823 by Francis and George Webster for Isaac and William Wilson. Later additions and alterations have been made. The building is constructed of tooled ashlar with corner pilasters on a plinth. It features a first-floor sill band, a second-floor lintel band, a dentilled eaves cornice, and a moulded cast-iron gutter. The roof is hipped, covered in graduated slate, and includes a large glazed dormer on the left side, as well as stone mid and end chimneys.
The building is three storeys and seven bays wide, arranged as 3:1:1:1:1. A semicircular-headed carriage arch, now blocked with an inserted casement, is located in the recessed central bay. The block to the right has a part-glazed double door and a semicircular fanlight within a central porch, with single sashes in recessed surrounds to either side. The block to the left has a glazed double door and a radiating fanlight in a semicircular-headed architrave, also with single sashes in recessed surrounds. There are seven windows on each upper floor, mostly sashes. The three-bay south return includes a sash to the right of an inserted porch, and sashes with glazing bars to each upper floor. Notably, all windows on the second floor are shorter. 20th-century additions and extensions are of no particular architectural interest. The building is included on the list for group value.
