Description
The Church of St Michael is a church built in 1826, which incorporates a re-set Norman tympanum. The aspe and roof were added in 1926. It is constructed from stone rubble with ashlar dressings and has slate roofs. The church features a four-bay nave with a west tower and an east apse. The nave contains two-light straight-headed windows adorned with Decorated tracery. The porch has a parapet and a gablet with shields, along with a pointed entrance that has a moulded arch. Inside the entrance, there is a re-set Norman tympanum depicting Christ with raised hands, along with a runic inscription that acknowledges Gamel the patron and Hubert the mason.
The tower is supported by diagonal buttresses and features a two-light west window with a transom, straight-headed bell-openings with slate louvres, and an embattled parapet. There is a lean-to vestry on the north side. The canted apse has a high parapet with an inscription, and the five-light east window has a segmental-pointed head with flanking buttresses. The south gabled organ loft includes a three-light window.
Inside, the church has collar and tie-beam trusses with struts, a shallow corbelled chancel arch, and oil lamps mounted on brackets. The font is octagonal and in a goblet form. The tower contains 19th-century text boards. The octagonal pulpit is located at the junction with the organ loft. The chancel features recesses with shouldered lintels and an arcaded chancel rail, along with 12th-century fragments found in the porch.
