Description

The Elba Monument is a structure erected in 1814 by James Bateman of Tolson Hall. It is made of roughly squared and coursed limestone, set on a two-stage plinth with ashlar dressings. Originally, a plaque was intended to be placed on the monument, which would have read: "In honour of William Pitt the Pilot that weathered the storm" Elba. However, due to Napoleon's escape from Elba, this inscription was never engraved. A century later, in 1914, a tablet was placed here by Charles Cropper of Ellergreen. The monument is located on a mound known as Monument Hill, northwest of Kendal, and it holds landscape value.
