Description

These are two cottages, originally built as a private tollhouse in 1835, located on Burneside Road, Burneside. A later extension was added in the late 19th century. The cottages have walls constructed from limewashed rubble, with some areas roughcast, and a roof covered in graduated green slate. There is a chimney stack on the ridge of the roof and a larger stack at the eaves.

The east-facing elevation has three doors and three windows on each floor. The left-hand door features a boarded and studded facade with a false four-centred arch and a pitched slate porch. The central door has an oblong fanlight and a 19th-century casement window sheltered by a continuous hood mould. A 19th-century cross window with a single iron opening casement is to the right of the central door, followed by a 20th-century door shielded by a slate drip. The upper floor features two 19th-century cross windows and a late 19th-century sash window, alongside a small attic window with a triangular head and a hood mould. A bay window with Gothic tracery and an iron opening casement is present on the south-facing elevation, while a blank shield adorns the west side. An original gatepost, marking the site of the former tollgate, stands on the east side.
