Description
The garden wall and gateways located north-west of Greystoke Castle date from the late 18th century, with some alterations made in the mid-19th century. The structure is built from a mix of grey and pink sandstone rubble and features a low wall of varying height topped with flat coping stones. At the northern end, there are two 18th-century square rusticated gate piers, each with side supporting scrolls; similar piers were located in front of the castle and are depicted in a drawing from 1825. The southern end of the wall has a 19th-century Tudor-Gothic doorway that has been cut through it, featuring the Howard motto inscribed on a ribbon scroll. This structure is listed for its group value with Greystoke Castle.
