Description

Dale Farmhouse and the adjoining barn, located in Ainstable Dale, is a building that was likely constructed in the late 17th century with alterations made in the mid 18th century. The structure is made of coursed red sandstone rubble and features large flush quoins. It has a graduated green slate roof with coped gables and kneelers, along with stone chimney stacks, one of which is from the 19th century while the other is original.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has three bays. The entrance is a plank door with a quoined surround and a reeded lintel. On the ground floor, there are triple casement windows flanking the door, which have flat stone mullions. Above, the sash windows with glazing bars are framed by reeded stone surrounds. There is a benchmark on the quoin stone to the right of the entrance.

To the right of the farmhouse is a single-storey outbuilding with a sandstone slate roof and a plank door. Adjacent to this, at a 45-degree angle, is another structure with sandstone rubble walls, slit vents, and plank doors, topped with a steeply pitched corrugated iron roof that has replaced the original thatch. To the left of the farmhouse stands a small two-storey granary, built of red sandstone rubble with a Welsh slate roof. This granary has a plank door and a small filled upper window, along with external stone steps leading to a side loft door.

Historically, the farmhouse served as a public house that was associated with Sir Richard Hodgson's brewery in Carlisle, although its name does not appear in the directories.
