Description

Outhwaite and the adjoining outbuildings are a late 18th-century farmhouse and associated structures. The farmhouse is built from grey sandstone coursed rubble resting on a red sandstone plinth, featuring quoins with V-joints. It has a graduated green slate roof with coped gables and kneelers, along with corbelled end stone chimney stacks. The building is two storeys high and has three bays. The entrance features a plank door surrounded by an alternate block surround with a keyed entablature. Flanking the door are double 2-pane sash windows, with additional 2-pane sash windows above, all set within moulded stone architraves.

Inside, the dining room showcases a fireplace with a pulvinated frieze and a moulded cornice, along with a spit rack and panelled cupboards above. The farmhouse retains original six-panel doors throughout. A 19th-century staircase features square balusters, carved tread ends, and a ramped handrail. A round arched staircase window at the rear has radial glazing bars.

To the right of the farmhouse are the barns, which form an L-shape and are two storeys tall with numerous bays. They have similar walls and roofs to the farmhouse, featuring round and flat arched cart entrances with plank doors, as well as external stone steps leading to loft doors. There is a 2-pane sash window nearest to the house, with a filled window above it, and an upper floor casement with glazing bars to the right. The outbuilding to the left is also two storeys high with three bays, featuring three round open arches on the ground floor and 2-pane sashes above, along with a single-storey outshot at the rear.
