Description
The Gables is a Tudor house built in 1825 and 1866, located on the north side of Fairbank. The section closest to Fairbank features a date stone inscribed "ACN 1825" and is a symmetrical three-bay design with a pebbledashed exterior and a slate roof. It has two large chimneys and a two-storey porch with a triangular gable, supported by deep kneelers and topped with three finials. The right-hand gable is shaped similarly. The house has three-light windows, all with chamfered surrounds and mullions; the ground floor windows include a transom and a label with round stops. There is a Tudor doorway with a label and a studded door.
To the left is a large addition from 1866, constructed of ashlar with a slate roof and three chimneys. This section features a shaped gable that breaks forward to the right and has a one-storey gabled porch in the centre. The windows here are all of two lights with one transom, except for the ground floor right window, which has three lights. The rear of the building has similar details. The Gables was formerly the Estate Agent's House for the Underley Estate, and a disused drive from Underley Hall runs between The Gables and Abbeyfield Lodge across the street.
