Description
Fountain Head and the adjoining barn are a house and former house, now a barn, likely built in the late 16th century with additions from 1633, featuring the initials I.H. and E.H., along with 19th-century alterations. The structure is made of whitewashed red sandstone random rubble with flush quoins and has a graduated sandstone slate roof with a coped gable and a kneeler on the right side. There are two storeys with the original house having three bays, while the 17th-century extension has two bays, both under a common roof.
The original house includes a large projecting cart entrance on the right, a ground floor three-light stone-mullioned window in a chamfered surround to the left, and a similar window above that has been blocked. The rear wall features two partially blocked two-light stone-mullioned windows, along with a similar upper floor window and three smaller original windows, all now blocked. The extension has a 20th-century door in a chamfered surround with a dated and inscribed lintel, and 19th-century two-pane sash windows in painted stone surrounds, with the top right window having glazing bars. A 19th-century outshut at the rear has 20th-century casement windows.
Edward Fountain married Elizabeth Senhouse, a relative of the Bishop of Carlisle, in 1632, and it is suggested that he may have moved into this house around that time. The 19th-century barn extension to the left and the 20th-century brick outshut are not of interest.
