Description

The barn to the west of Stonehouse is a farm outbuilding that serves as both a barn and a cowhouse. It dates from the 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The structure features clay walling with pebble facings on the street elevation, while the side and rear elevations are made of render and brick, all resting on a substantial boulder foundation. The roof is covered with Welsh slate, which replaced an original stone slate covering that can still be seen at the eaves of a rear offshoot.

This single-storey building has overlofts and lean-to rear offshoots at each end. The street elevation has quoined corners and cobble facings, with three unevenly spaced doors that have stone surrounds; these doors are now blocked with brick infill and feature three-pane hopper lights. The rear elevation includes an off-centre full-height threshing doorway, a single taking-in door to the left, and another single doorway further left. Each offshoot has a central doorway. Inside, there is a flagged threshing floor and mass clay construction that is visible. Simple tie beam trusses support single purlins.

The barn is listed for its group value with the Stone House to the east, with which it has a strong visual connection, and it is of particular interest as an example of mass clay wall construction that is unique to the Solway Plain.
