Description

Challoner House entrance wall, brick paved courtyard and associated buildings form part of No 5 South Street. Constructed in the 18th century, the entrance wall is roughly finished with a colour-washed surface and stone quoins. It has an old slate roof. The wall features three doorways, each topped with a traceried fanlight. Eight 16-paned sash windows are set into the ground floor, with nine windows above, all framed by plain stone architraves. A long courtyard wall extends to the left, also roughly finished, with a castellated top and a large segmental arched entrance giving access to a cobbled yard paved with bricks. Within the courtyard are a stable, a coach-house and a former coachman’s cottage, forming a range of buildings to the left.
