Description
Thornyland Quaker Meeting House and attached stable is a redundant Quaker meeting house built in 1773, which replaced an earlier meeting house on the same site. The building features a reused datestone from 1698 in its end wall, originating from the previous structure. Its walls are rendered with raised red sandstone quoins, and it has a hipped green slate roof. The meeting house is a single storey with three bays, and there is a stable extension to the right. The entrance has a plank door set in a plain stone surround with a segmental arch above it. The windows are leaded panes within quoined surrounds, also featuring segmental arches. The stable has a plank door and a small opening to the right. Inside, there is a screen with small sash shutters that divides the women's meeting house. For further details, refer to David M. Butler's "Quaker Meeting Houses of the Lake Counties," published in 1978, pages 13-15.
