Description
The city boundary stone, dating from the 1830s or 1840s, is made of calciferous sandstone. It is a square stone with a flattened top set into the ground. The stone is inscribed on two faces with "C.C." (for City of Carlisle) and on another face with "DIXON," referring to the then Mayor. The lettering shows some wear due to angle flaking. This stone is the only remaining boundary marker from the time when the city boundary was extended to the south bank of the River Eden. In 1836, the city sought permission to mark the boundary on Eden Bridge, suggesting that this stone may have been erected during the mayoralty of Peter Dixon in 1838, although several members of the Dixon family served as mayors until 1853. The stone is also shown in its current position on the 1865 Ordnance Survey map of the city.
