Description
The wall, railings, and piers located to the west of the Sands Sports Centre in Carlisle were originally built for the Cattle Market, likely around 1895. The structure features a low, chamfered wall made of red sandstone, topped with heavy cast-iron railings. These railings have a speared design, with every alternate rail ending in a speared ball finial and supported by interval columns. The end piers are made of red sandstone, with squared shafts and round chamfered angles, standing on moulded plinths and topped with modillioned segmental capitals. The railings are arranged in stepped sections to follow the slope of the ground. Following the widening of the Eden Bridge in 1932, the railings were moved back from their original position and now sit beside a ramp that runs parallel to the bridge, providing access to Swifts Bank. Another section of these railings can be found under Newmarket Road.
