Description
Throp and adjoining outbuildings are a farmhouse and associated structures dated 1830, located in Upper Denton, Gilsland. The buildings are constructed from calciferous sandstone coursed squared rubble, some of which is sourced from the nearby Roman Wall, and feature raised quoins. The slate roof has coped gables and kneelers, with yellow brick chimney stacks. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has three bays. The 20th-century door features a flat arch with a keyed and dated entablature. The windows are 2-pane sashes with raised plain stone surrounds.
To the right of the farmhouse is an 18th-century single-storey outbuilding, built with similar stonework and a Welsh slate roof, also featuring coped gables and kneelers. This outbuilding has a filled original entrance and 20th-century windows, along with a plank door to the farmyard that has a painted stone surround. A contemporary outbuilding to the right is constructed from similar materials and has a matching roof. The plank doors of this outbuilding have plain stone surrounds, and there are louvred vents with similar surrounds. The listing does not include the detached farmyard buildings.
