Description
The Crown and Thistle Public House is an early 19th-century building with 20th-century additions. It features painted stucco, a Welsh slate roof, and brick chimney stacks. The pub is two storeys high and has three bays, with a single-storey, two-bay extension to the left and a two-storey, two-bay landlord's house to the right. The pub includes a 20th-century brick porch with a slate roof and a plank door. It has flanking tripartite sash windows with glazing bars, and similar windows above, all with painted stone surrounds. The extension features a projecting brick porch with plank doors and sash windows with glazing bars. The landlord's house has a 20th-century top-glazed door with a painted stone surround, flanked by sash windows with glazing bars and gabled dormers above, all with painted stone sills. There is no mention of this pub before 1916, when it was owned by the Central Control Board, and it was de-nationalised in 1973. It is listed partly for its important riverside position opposite the church.
