Description
Edenbank is a house dating from 1834, built for Mr. Elliot, a wine merchant from Brampton. It is constructed of calciferous sandstone ashlar and features a hipped slate roof with ashlar chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and three bays, with channelled ashlar on the ground floor that ends in a string course. The roof has a low pitch and wide overhanging eaves. The entrance includes a 10-panel door with a patterned fanlight, set within a porch that has Doric pilasters, a moulded entablature, and a cornice with lead capping. The sash windows have plain surrounds, with glazing bars on those of the upper floor. Edenbank was later owned by James Steel, the Mayor of Carlisle who died in 1851, and by William Oram, a merchant from Carlisle. It was the first large house built in Wetheral, influenced by the construction of the nearby Newcastle to Carlisle Railway.
