Description

The air shaft cap to the former railway tunnel at Whitehaven Castle Park is a structure built to ventilate the Whitehaven & Furness Junction Railway, which opened in 1852 and runs beneath the grounds of Whitehaven Castle. It is made of red brick in English bond and features stone coping. The cap is circular in plan. This shaft was the only one visible from Lowther's Mansion (Whitehaven Castle), so it was surrounded by iron railings set on a stone plinth, with the uprights and main verticals adorned with crocketed heads.
