Description
The Whitehaven cenotaph is a First World War memorial built in 1923, with an added inscription for the Second World War. It is made of Darley Dale sandstone and is situated just inside Castle Park, facing the main south-western entrance.
The cenotaph features a square column topped with a low pyramidal cap adorned with a wreath and additional wreath-foliage decoration at both the top and base. The south-western face, which faces the park entrance, displays a relief carving of a female figure holding a wreath, representing Peace. Above this figure, the inscription reads "TO OUR GLORIOUS DEAD," and at her feet, the years "1914 – 1918" are noted. The base of the column flares out and rests on a shallow step inscribed with "LEST WE FORGET." Above this step, there is an added stone of a different color inscribed with "1939-1945." The memorial stands on a plain, uninscribed base, and the other three faces of the cenotaph are plain with no further inscriptions. The surrounding brick kerbing is a later addition and is not included in the listing.
