Description
The Methodist Church and Sunday School, built in 1814 and later altered in 1877 by T. L. Banks, is located on Lowther Street. This building features pink sandstone in a crazy-paving pattern with ashlar dressings and slated roofs. It is designed in the late 13th-century Gothic style, characterized by plate tracery, and has a cruciform shape with a wide apse and a prominent south-west tower. There is also a smaller meeting room and a custodian's flat located behind the main structure.
Inside, the church has a deep gallery that runs all around, featuring Tudor arcading on the rail, which rests on sandstone piers that support a stone upper arcade. The capitals of these piers are intricately carved with foliage and angel heads. An organ is situated in the central east gallery, and there is a raised pulpit that is likely a later addition. A wall has been inserted below the west gallery.
At the rear, the Sunday School building, which is now used as a concert hall, is constructed of plain coursed sandstone and has some ornamental detailing on the windows.
