Description

Nos. 31-37 Fisher Street consists of two houses and a warehouse, which have been converted into two shops. The building at Nos. 31 and 33 is dated 1776 on an oval datestone, while Nos. 35 and 37 date from the late 18th century, both featuring later alterations. The exterior is finished in painted stucco, with 20th-century tile roofs that are hipped at the corner, and an end brick chimney stack on Nos. 35 and 37.

No. 31/33 is three storeys tall with a five-window range, where the left two bays likely represent a warehouse conversion. No. 35/37 occupies a curved corner site and is also three storeys high, with a single bay facing Fisher Street and two bays on St Albans Row, having a higher roofline than No. 31/33. Both buildings feature similar 20th-century ground-floor shop windows beneath a continuous signboard, with 20th-century doors on both Fisher Street and St Albans Row.

No. 31/33 has sash windows set in plain reveals with painted stone sills. Notably, it displays the only remaining firemark of the Newcastle Fire Insurance Company between the upper floor windows in the city. The left return wall, facing Rosemary Lane, has blocked warehouse doors and windows on each floor. No. 35/37 features sash windows with glazing bars on the first floor and casements above, all framed in painted stone architraves. The interiors of both properties have been altered.
