Description

The property comprises a farmhouse and attached barns, byres, and stables, built in the 18th and 19th centuries. The main farmhouse dates largely from the 18th century, with evidence of an earlier structure dated 1707, inscribed "W.B. A.B." (Barwis). A later phase of building and alteration is recorded with a stone above the stable door, dated June 2, 1819. The facade of the farmhouse is constructed from red sandstone ashlar, featuring eaves modillions and angle pilasters; the remaining walls are of coursed sandstone rubble. It has a graduated hipped greenslate roof with brick chimney stacks. The main farmhouse is two storeys high, with three bays and a rear extension under a common roof, adjoining a T-shaped stable and barn complex. The front entrance features a six-panel door under a radial fanlight, set within a Tuscan-style doorcase with a pediment. Sash windows with glazing bars are set within painted stone surrounds. A rear extension has a four-panel door under a fanlight, also in a painted stone surround with a cornice. An upper floor sash window features a console-bracketed cornice. A rear wall incorporates a built-in, reused dated lintel. The stable building has plank doors, loft doors and casement windows with glazing bars, all set within painted stone surrounds. One doorway is adorned with a sculpted galloping horse and date positioned under a Sun Fire Insurance mark. The barns contain through segmental cart archways, plank doors under shaped lintels, and louvred vents, all within stone surrounds. The end wall facing the road features heart-shaped and round vents. A single-storey dairy to the left of the house is not considered to be of historical interest.
