Description
The byres and barn located northeast of Mechi Farmhouse were built between 1863 and 1864 for William Lawson of Brayton. These structures feature polychrome rubble walls with flush red-sandstone quoins and are topped with a hipped Welsh slate roof over the tower. The long, single-storey byres have a triple-span design and are enclosed on two sides by L-shaped stables and a granary. There is a low square tower on the right and an adjoining open-sided barn. The buildings have boarded doors, some set in segmental arches, and all feature red-sandstone surrounds. The barn's roof is supported by tall brick piers. Inside, remnants of the turbine shafts and gearing can still be seen. The complexities of these buildings are detailed in William Lawson's book, "Ten Years of Gentleman Farming," published in 1874. This site is part of a model farm group and is listed for its group value with Mechi Farmhouse and the associated farm buildings.
