Description

A terrace of sixteen houses, now eleven, built between 1852 and 1853 in Carlisle for the Ferguson Brothers, designed by John Hodgson of Carlisle. The houses, located on Bridge Terrace at Holme Head, were originally part of the Holme Head Works and have undergone alterations in the late 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed of Flemish bond brickwork, featuring light-coloured headers on a chamfered plinth, with calciferous sandstone dressings that are mostly painted. The roofs are covered with Welsh slate and retain original shared brick chimney stacks.

The terrace is low in height, with two storeys. The original six houses on the right-hand side have a lower roofline. Originally, each house comprised two bays, though some have been combined to form four-bay dwellings. The doorways are framed with pilastered stone surrounds, often paired, with some being blocked; the remaining doorways contain 20th-century doors. The ground floor windows are sash windows, while the upper floors have smaller top-opening casements, all set within brick reveals with stone sills and flat brick arches. The interior of the houses has not been inspected. Original plans for both terraces are held at Cumbria County Record Office, and a plan approved on 13 September 1852, referencing the six houses already “just built,” accounted for ten additional dwellings.
