Description
Stonewalls is a farmhouse dated 1672, with an inscription dedicated to John Mulcaster and his wife Jane, located in Irthington, Laversdale. The building underwent a 19th-century extension to increase its width and has seen 20th-century alterations to both the original and later sections. The front features pebble-dash walls, a slate roof, and brick chimney stacks, while the original house at the rear is constructed of dressed red sandstone. The front elevation is two storeys high with four bays, which was converted in the 20th century into two houses, but it is now one house again. The entrances have 20th-century stone surrounds and doors, accompanied by two-pane sash windows. The rear entrance boasts a shouldered moulded architrave and an inscribed panel above, featuring carved raised letters along with decorative carvings of ducks and flowers, topped with a hood mould. The original windows have been replaced with a two-pane sash and 20th-century steel casements. The listing primarily highlights the very good inscribed panel in this much-altered building.
