Description

The Church of St Cuthbert is a parish church built in 1871 by J.A. Cory in partnership with C.J. Ferguson, located on a medieval site and incorporating some medieval features. The church is constructed of hammer-dressed St Bees and calciferous sandstone, with ashlar quoins, buttresses, and a string course. It has a graduated greenslate roof with coped gables and cross finials. The building features a 4-bay nave with aisles, a north organ chamber, and a 3-storey tower/porch. The chancel has 2 bays and a north vestry. The nave includes three gabled dormer clerestory windows and paired-lancet aisle windows. The tower has a south doorway and an east side window that is 13th century and reused from the original church. The chancel features paired lancet windows and a traceried east window.

Inside, there is a 4-bay north arcade and a 3-bay south arcade with pointed arches made of alternate red and yellow sandstone on round columns. The chancel arch is a re-used zigzag Norman design. The church contains unsigned late 19th century and early 20th century stained glass. There is a wall plaque from 1684 commemorating the Farish family and Reverend Edward Stanley, who died in 1834. The chancel also has late 19th century stained glass and wall plaques for the Ballantine-Dykes family. A 19th century piscina is present, with the medieval one now located in the vestry. The vestry doorway is a re-used 13th century feature.
