Description
Plumbland Church of England School is a grammar school that now serves as a village school. It was built in 1799, with extensions added in the 19th century. The building features cement rendered walls with red sandstone angle pilasters, topped by a graduated greenslate roof with coped gables and kneelers, along with brick chimney stacks. It is a single-storey structure, roughly cross-shaped, and includes a three-storey clock-tower porch. The porch has a plank door set in a red sandstone surround on the side wall. There are louvred vent openings and clock faces with Roman numerals on two sides, as well as angle finials. The windows are casement style, some of which are double, all framed in red sandstone surrounds. A Greek inscription is present on the roundel of the north gable, and there is an open stone bellcote on the west side. According to Parson & White's Directory from 1829, the school was built in 1799 and originally contained two rooms, each measuring 42 feet by 24 feet; one room was designated for classical studies and the other for English, writing, arithmetic, and other subjects. The school was open to all boys and girls living in the parish free of charge, subject to certain regulations.
