Description
The Church of St Mary is a parish church that dates back to the early 12th century, with additions from the late 12th century and alterations from the early 14th and 15th centuries. It underwent restoration in 1878. The church is constructed from squared blocks of mixed red and St Bees sandstone and features angle buttresses. It has a graduated greenslate roof with coped gables and cross finials. The structure includes a 3-bay nave and a 2-bay south aisle that adjoins a porch. There is a west open bellcote from 1724. The chancel consists of 2 bays and has a 19th-century north vestry.
The nave features a blocked north door from the 13th century and two 2-light windows from 1878, along with a blank buttressed west wall. The aisle retains original 2-light 13th-century windows, as well as one single light window that was restored in the 19th century. The chancel has a blocked priest's doorway and one original lancet window, along with 16th-century 2-light windows on the south and east sides. A carved head is set in the gable, and there is a sundial over the porch dated 1836, which includes the names of the churchwardens.
Inside, the church features a round-arched arcade on circular piers, with the western arcade suggesting it was meant to extend the full length of the nave. There is an aumbry recess in the south wall and a very narrow round-headed chancel arch from the 12th century, which has an enlarged squint. The royal arms on the north wall are dated 1759, and there is a 12th-century cushion font, along with a medieval grave-slab and cross fragments. The chancel includes an original splay for the north window and another aumbry recess. A 20th-century stained-glass window is located in the east, and there are creed and pater boards dated 1832, although one board is missing. The church also contains 20th-century furnishings and fittings.
