Description
The Close is a house located in Cogenhoe, dating from the mid to late 17th century, which was raised by a storey and altered in the early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with a slate roof and brick end stacks. The house features a two-unit central-staircase plan and is three storeys high with a three-window range. The main front faces the garden and includes a central six-panel door with an overlight, panelled reveals, and a pilastered wood surround adorned with a pattern of diamonds and circles, topped with a moulded cornice or hood. To the right of the door is a 17th-century upright keyed oval niche made of ironstone. There is a large canted bay window to the left of the door, while the ground and first floors have 16-pane sash windows and the attic features 12-pane sashes, all with rendered surrounds. The entire front was formerly rendered and has ironstone quoins. A single-storey extension is present to the left. Additionally, a high stone-coped wall made of coursed limestone and ironstone rubble extends from the right angle along Church Street to enclose the garden. Inside, there is a dog leg staircase with a panelled newel and twisted balusters leading to the first flight.
