Description

The Weir is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, dating from the early to mid 17th century. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with ironstone dressings and features an old and 20th-century plain-tile roof with a brick end stack. The building has an L-plan layout and stands two storeys high with an attic, presenting a two-window front range.

The central false door is flanked by stone buttresses that are designed to resemble a gabled porch. The ground and first floors are adorned with four-light wave-moulded stone mullion windows, with the ground floor windows featuring hood moulds. The structure includes a wave-moulded plinth, ironstone quoins, and stone-coped gables with kneelers, as well as one gabled roof dormer.

The rear left wing has two- and three-light casement windows with wooden lintels and a 20th-century glazed door that has a chamfered stone surround. Inside, the ground floor showcases moulded bar-stop-chamfered spine beams, while the first floor also has bar-stop-chamfered spine beams. There is an open fireplace with a bar-stop-chamfered bressumer and a 19th-century marble chimneypiece. Another fireplace features a boxed bressumer, and there are two stone corner fireplaces in the first-floor rooms of the main range, both with moulded Tudor-arched heads and 19th-century grates. The house retains old two-panel doors with HL hinges.
