Description

The Old Rectory is a house that was originally built as a rectory around 1680, with additions from the 18th and early 19th centuries. It is constructed from lias ashlar and features a slate roof. The building has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys tall with a five-window range. The garden front includes French casements on the ground floor, which have glazing bars and stone lintels. The first and second floors are fitted with sash windows, also with glazing bars, which become smaller on the third floor, all featuring stone lintels. A large central casement window is present on the first floor. There is a flat string course between the storeys and rusticated quoins at the corners. The roof is hipped with an overhanging soffit and large brick stacks.

On the left side elevation, there are 17th-century moulded stone window surrounds with mullion and transom stubs. The elevation facing the road is similar, featuring a central glazed door with a rusticated surround and rusticated pilasters that extend around the central first-floor window. At the basement level, there are 17th-century two-light stone mullioned windows.

Inside, the central hall is supported by four moulded pilasters that hold up a quadripartite vault. The early 19th-century staircase features cut spandrels and an outward-curving balustrade. The Dining and Drawing Rooms have six-panelled doors and a moulded cornice.
