Description

Walgrave Hall Farmhouse is a country house, now a farmhouse, dating to the mid-17th century, with alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is built of limestone ashlar and squared coursed lias, with a slate roof. The building now has a three-unit plan, although it was originally larger. It has two storeys and an attic, with a four-window front. A gabled cross wing projects to the right and features four-light stone mullion windows with transoms to both the ground and first floors, along with a blank two-light window to its return wall. The four-window range to the left has early 20th-century casement windows in original openings, characterised by flat arches and keystones. A 19th-century door, likely a former window opening, is located on the right and has a 20th-century porch. Ashlar gable parapets and brick stacks are visible at the ridge and end of the building. The side elevation to the right includes a blank two-light stone mullion with a transom. Inside, a plaster coat of arms of the Langham family, dated 1674, is located in the passage to the left of the entrance. This area is now subdivided and originally formed part of the main hall. The entrance hall contains two openings with semi-circular heads and keystones; similar openings are found on the first-floor landing. A fine staircase, dating to approximately 1630, is situated at the rear, around an open well and features balusters with Ionic heads and openwork newel posts. According to an 18th-century drawing, the original house was extended to the left of the present building and included a central tower.
