Description

Coton Manor is a manor house dating from 1662, built of limestone lias and ashlar, with a slate roof. It originally has an irregular cruciform plan and is two storeys tall with an attic. The garden front features a three-window range with a central projecting cross wing. To the right of the cross wing, there is a 20th-century door set beneath a 17th-century four-centred moulded stone arch. The cross wing and the bay to the right have three-light stone mullion windows with leaded lights on the ground and first floors, along with a two-light window in the attic. The bay to the right also includes two single-light windows with moulded stone surrounds. The gable stonework is banded limestone and lias, with ashlar gable parapets and kneelers, and a brick stack at the ridge. A datestone with a carved rosette is located in the central gable on the far right. The elevation to the right of the garden front is similar but features some 20th-century windows and a large early 20th-century gabled extension in a similar style. The left elevation mirrors the garden front with two- and three-light stone mullion windows and a main entrance that has a 20th-century door under a 17th-century four-centred moulded stone arch. The gable to the right also has banded limestone and lias, with a large early 20th-century extension to the left in a similar style. Inside, the Entrance Hall, which was originally the kitchen, features an open fireplace. A first-floor room contains a moulded stone fireplace and a fragment of a large metope frieze with a bucranium and rosette, reputedly reset from Holdenby Palace.
