Description
26A Church Street is a house dating from the mid to late 17th century. It was re-roofed and had its pitch altered in the 20th century after the thatch was removed. The building is constructed from coursed squared ironstone banded with limestone and features a 20th-century pantile roof, along with brick stacks. It has an L-shaped plan with a two-unit front range and is two stories high with a two-window range.
The entrance is a four-panel part-glazed door located to the left of the center, featuring a wooden lintel. The windows are three-light leaded casement windows, most of which are original except for the one on the ground floor to the left, and they have stone surrounds with hood moulds that are remnants of original stone mullion windows. The house has a chamfered plinth and ironstone quoins and kneelers at the original stone-coped gables.
On the left gable end, there are three-light chamfered stone mullion windows on both the ground and first floors, each with hood moulds. There is a wing at the rear left, which faced The Lane, but it collapsed after 1960; portions of the front wall and gable end wall still remain. Inside, the building features ogee-stop-chamfered spine beams.
